Type of tinnitus

  • Clicking or pulsatile tinnitus: normally noise produced as a ringing and buzzing type. But in this type produced clicking or rushing sound along with heartbeat.
  • Objective tinnitus: In this type of tinnitus your doctor may hear sound when they hear carefully.

Why tinnitus keeping you awake at night?

Unless you are deeply deaf, your ear picks up certain sounds all day long even if you do not realize it. The ears hear low noises like music playing or the TV humming even if there is no common sense of the sound. At the very least, you hear your personal voice, but at night, it all stops.

Suddenly, all the sound disappears and the level of confusion increases in the brain in response. It only knows one thing when faced with complete silence – even if it is not real, create noise.

In other words, tinnitus gets damaged at night because it is very quiet. Creating sound is a solution for those who can not sleep because their ears are ringing.

Causes of tinnitus

  • Hearing loss: Hearing loss is the most common cause of tinnitus.
  • Trauma: founded in both ears and caused due to loud noise and also with many other things.
  • Exposure to loud noise: tinnitus is mostly caused because of loud or high-frequency noises.
  • Medications: various medicine cause hearing loss such as aspirin, aminoglycoside, and many other ototoxic drugs.

  • Acoustic neuroma: tinnitus is caused due to various type of tumor which known as an acoustic neuroma.

Diagnosis

A doctor will examine your ears, neck, and head to look for possible causes of tinnitus. Tests include:

  • Hearing (audiological) exam. A doctor will make you sit in a soundproof room wearing earphones through which he will be played specific sounds into one ear at a time. You have to indicate when you can hear the sound, and your results are compared with results considered normal for your age. This can help to figure out possible causes of tinnitus.
  • Movement. A Doctor may ask you to move your eyes, move your neck, or clench your jaw, arms, and legs. If your tinnitus changes, it may help identify an underlying disorder that needs treatment.
  • Imaging tests.   You should not be depending on the suspected cause of your tinnitus, you may need imaging tests such as CT or MRI scans.

Treatment

Treating an underlying health condition

Treatment of your tinnitus, Doctor will first try to identify and detect any underlying, treatable condition that may be associated with your symptoms. If tinnitus is caused due to a health condition, The Doctor will take steps that could reduce the noise. Examples include:

  • Earwax removal. Removing impacted earwax can decrease tinnitus symptoms it will be very helpful.
  • Treating a blood vessel condition.  Surgery or another treatment to address the problem. Underlying vascular conditions may require medication
  • Changing your medication. If a medication you’re taking appears to be the cause of tinnitus, Doctor may strictly stop you from taking drugs or switching to a different medication.

Noise suppression

There can be cases, white noise may help suppress the sound so that it’s less bothersome. The doctor will suggest you to use an electronic device to suppress the noise. Devices include:

  • White noise machines. These kind of devices, which produce simulated environmental sounds such as ocean waves or falling rain, are often an effective treatment for tinnitus. If you want to try a white noise machine with pillow speakers to help you sleep. Dehumidifiers, fans, humidifiers, and air conditioners in the bedroom also may help to cover the internal noise at night.
  • Hearing aids. These can be especially helpful if you have hearing problems or hearing loss due to some reason as well as tinnitus.
  • Masking devices. It is similar to the hearing aids, this device produces a continuous, low-level white noise that suppresses tinnitus symptoms.
  • Tinnitus retraining. A hearing aid device delivers individually programmed tonal music to mask the specific frequencies of the tinnitus you experience every time. Over time, this technique may accustom you to the tinnitus, thereby helping you not to focus on it. Counseling is often a component of tinnitus retraining.

Medications

Drugs cannot help in curing the tinnitus but it can reduce the severity of symptoms or complications. Possible medications include the following:

  • Tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline and nortriptyline, They have been used with some success. These medications are generally used for only severe tinnitus, as they can cause side effects, including dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, and heart problems.
