What is Pseudobulbar Palsy? And It’s Symptoms

A Pseudobulbar Palsy is the type of medical disorder. In which, the person can’t control their body parts such as the face, mouth, and the tongue. In this disorder, you will find the loss of sensation or feeling in a part of the body like as the paralysis or uncontrolled bodily movements.

The Palsy tends to be progressive usually starts with the slurred speech due to the lack of control of the tongue. It may have a big impact on everyday life and affect your ability to speak, eat, and swallow.

In addition to this disorder, you may experience the uncontrollable laughing or cry at the inappropriate times. This condition is known as pseudobulbar affect or emotional incontinence. The Palsy is a condition that causes the loss of control of the muscles in your face.

It is common in the stroke patient.  And, those patients who are suffering from neurological disorder like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS) or Multiple Sclerosis(MS).

Causes of the Palsy

There are some important causes of Palsy. Some medical conditions which are responsible for the Palsy as listed below:

Symptoms of the Palsy

The people who are suffering from the palsy, they lose control of their facial muscles, tongue, lips, and the throat. As you know that it is a progressive condition. So, these are some of the most popular symptoms of the Palsy which are as follows:

  • Labile Affect – It is also known as pseudobulbar affect, emotional incontinence, or involuntary emotional expression disorder (IEED).
  • Dysphagia, or Difficulty in Swallowing as resulting in the increase the time required for the eating
  • Slurred Speech
  • Tongue Spasticity
  • Brisk Jaw Jerk
  • Dysarthria – In this condition, the muscles you use for speech are weak or you have difficulty controlling them.
  • Slow and Instinct Speech
  • Gag Reflex may be normal, Absent or Exaggerated
