What Is Alice in Wonderland Syndrome and its symptoms?

Alice in Wonderland Syndrome also called Todd’s syndrome or Lilliputian hallucination is a condition in which visual perception is altered. This altered state can cause objects to appear smaller, bigger, closer or farther away then really are. It is believed that at least 10 percent of the population experience these effects at least once in their lifetime.

You may also find that the room you’re in — or the surrounding furniture — seems to shift and feel further away or closer than it really is.

These altered states aren’t the result of a problem in your eyes or a hallucination.

AWS altered states are different for each person. What you experience may vary from one state to the next as well. A typical episode lasts a few minutes. Some can last up to half an hour. During that time, you may experience one or more these common symptoms.

Migraines

People who experience AWS also experience migraines. Some doctors and researchers believe AWS is actually an aura. This is an early sensory indication of a migraine. Other believe AWS may be a rare subtype of a migraine.

Size distortion

Micropsia is the sensation in which your body or objects around you start growing smaller. Macropsia is that your body or objects around you start growing larger. Both are common experiences during an altered state of AWS.

Perceptual distortion

If you feel that objects near you are growing larger or that they’re closer to you than they really are, you’re experiencing pelopsia. It’s the sensation that objects are getting smaller or farther away from you than really are.

Time distortion

Some people with AWS lose their sense of time. They may feel the time is moving faster or slower than it really is.

Sound distortion

Every sound even typically quiet sounds, seems loud and intrusive.

Loss of coordination or control on the loss of limb

This symptom occurs when muscles feel as if they’re acting involuntarily. In other words, you may feel as though you’re not controlling your limbs. Likewise, the altered sense of reality can affect how you move or walk. You may feel uncoordinated or have difficulty moving normally.

Although AWS often gets better over time. It rarely causes any complications or problems. So, there is nothing to fear as such.

How is AWS diagnosed?

A doctor can make a diagnosis by ruling out other possible causes or explanations for your symptoms.

Although there are many tests that can help diagnose AWS like

  • MRI scan
  • Electroencephalography (EEG)
