There are different types of tests and treatment for hearing loss audiologist perform. The tests and treatments for hearing loss depend on the cause and the type of hearing loss.
The diagnosis of hearing loss occurs through a hearing test. There are seven types of a hearing test.
It diagnoses the range of pitches a person can hear. The test helps in finding the quickest sound a person can hear at a different frequency. During the test, a person wears earphones which help in letting go of the sound one at a time. In case a child refuses to wear earphone then sound field screening is done. In the sound field, screening sound comes through speakers inside a sound booth. The patient responds by raising a hand or pressing a button or by pointing towards the ear. The audiogram shows the results of the hearing test.
This hearing screening determines how well patients inner ear and cochlea works. The test measures Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), sounds are given off by the inner ear after responding to a sound. There are hair cells in the inner ear which vibrate while responding to the sound. The vibration makes a quiet sound which echoes back in the middle ear. In case of hearing loss greater than 25-30 decibels, a patient will not produce otoacoustic emissions.
The test gives the data about the inner ear and the brain pathway required for hearing. The test is especially for children and people who are unable to perform normal screening test. Electrotrodes on the head of the patient are also connected to the computer which records brain wave activity in response to the sounds.
It determines the speech reception threshold, how well a patient listens and repeats words. The test is for adults and older children who can speak.
It helps in determining the patient’s middle ear functioning. An audiologist will get different measurements such as tympanometry, static acoustic impedance, and acoustic reflex measures.
This is another type of pure-tone test that measures the reaction of the sound of your inner ear. A conductor will be placed behind your ear; It will send small vibrations directly into the internal ear through the bone. It is different from the traditional version, which uses air to send audio sounds. If the results of this test are different from pure-tone audiometry, your Green Valley audiologist can use this information to determine the loss of your hearing.
This test measures your eardrum’s speed in response to air pressure. It can determine whether the fluid, wax buildup, eardrum perforation or tumor is formed.
Hearing loss treatment options include hearing aids, medical interventions, and surgery. These options should be determined by a hearing health care provider and your doctor. The correct treatment depends on many factors, including hearing loss, underlying cause, type of hearing loss and your lifestyle.
