Undoubtedly, the human body functions are completely complex and delicate at the same time. Before we know about Otosclerosis and Tinnitus we should know how do we hear.

How do we hear?

Sound waves travel through the ear canal to the eardrum. It creates vibration in three tiny bones placed in the ear cavity (i.e malleus, incus, and stapes). These vibrating bones amplify the sound and send them to the cochlea in the inner ear.

Once sounds entered in the cochlea. The thousands of tiny hair cells in the cochlea move up and down with this wave. Consequently, the movement of these hair cells produces electric signals in the basilar membrane (hair cell’s location).

Later, electric signals reach the brain immediately through the auditory nerve of the cochlea. And finally, the outcome of the entire procedure comes in the form of a manifest sound.

What is otosclerosis?

Otosclerosis can be defined as a type of hearing loss disease. It occurs due to an abnormal alteration of a bone within the middle ear cavity. Bone metabolism or bone remodeling is an enduring process. In this process, the new bone tissues automatically replace the old ones.

In otosclerosis, bones grow improperly or overly and interrupt the sound wave entering the inner ear.

Likewise, the steps from the above-mentioned bones, if stuck or if any one of them stops vibrating, the ability of sound travel to inner ear disrupted. As a consequence, the ringing, whistling or buzzing like sounds start in the ear called tinnitus.

However, there are many conditions obtainable to cause tinnitus. But you can describe it as one symptom of otosclerosis.

Eventually, otosclerosis affect both ears. An untreated loss gradually worsens and cause profound hearing loss. Mild deafness can be processed by a hearing aid but surgery is often required to restore hearing to its normal.

Diagnosed otosclerosis

There are several symptoms of otosclerosis. A person having otosclerosis speaks silently. People who are suffering from cochlear deafness speaks up loudly. A person having otosclerosis hear better in rush places because sounds are raise in high frequency and loudness. It is just similar to tinnitus or otosclerosis causes tinnitus.

ENT specialist or audiologist do the diagnostic test. They test the ear with tuning forks and audiometric to show conductive deafness. The specialist also observes the movement of the ossicles(kind of test) using a machine called a tympanometer. The name of the test is the stapedial reflex test. It is fast, painless and non-invasive.

Medications

In some form of otosclerosis for good results, fluoride treatment has been used. If the specialist recommended the fluoride treatment. It is beneficial to know the concentration of fluoride for a correct dose that is going to be mix with the patient`s drinking water.

Surgery

Most of the patients decide not to under surgery. However, surgery can return to hearing normal. But most of the patients use hearing aids.

Surgery is commenced in the 19th century. But later on, the modern way of operation is introduced name stapedectomy. It is widely used by the surgeons and they prefer to call it stapedotomy.

In stapedectomy surgery, removal of stapes is the procedure.  In stapedotomy surgery, the stapes are fixed into its proper position.
