The amount of hearing loss (or degree) is based on hearing sensitivity of a person’s experience. To determine the loss of hearing of a person, their hearing limits should be set. An auditory threshold is defined as a minimum level of sound that can be heard 50% of the time. Decibel (or DB) is a unit of intensity that is used to describe hearing sensitivity. During the diagnostic hearing evaluation, the threshold is measured at different frequencies (or Hertz, Hz) in each ear.

Procedure for Audiogram Tests

  • The audiologist will bring you into a unique soundproof booth or a quiet room in which the test will happen.
  • You will have a couple of earphones, put over your ears and also you will be given a unique handset with a reaction catch on it.
  • Your audiologist will play you a progression of sounds through these earphones. The sounds will be played into one ear at any given moment as it were.
  • Your audiologist will educate you to press the reaction catch at whatever point you feel that you hear a sound in your earphones, and to hold the conservative for whatever length of time that you can hear the sound – just relinquish the catch when you think the sound has halted.

What happens during the test?

Generally, Audiometry tests are organized in a quiet soundproofing room. Earphones will be placed on your head. You will be asked to talk and not sit down. Before or after the normal audiometry test, tuning forks are also used to conduct Rinne and Weber tests. Each test evaluates the ability of various types of hearing loss.

To assess speech discrimination, you will be instructed to repeat the words that you listen to. You will hear a series of two-syllable words on a volume which gradually decreases with the increase of the test. However, In the second phase of the test, you will hear and repeat a series of one-syllable in a quantity which does not change.

During the tympanometry and acoustic reflex test, a soft plug is placed in your ear. The plug will change the pressure and it will make a loud sound, and track its reactions to sound and various pressures. The movements of the eardrum are measured and at the same time, it is associated with the reflexes of small muscles.
