My 6-year old brother does not pronounce letters “s” and “r” correctly, is there a solution?

If your brother or child does not pronounce letters s and r correctly, then it suffers from the lisping disorder. A lisping generally refers to a person’s who are having a problem to pronounce the “s” and “r” sounds because of incorrect tongue position in the mouth. These pronouncing errors result in a speech disorder.

Most of the children lisp at different stages of speech development. Mostly when kids lose their front teeth they have a lisping problem. Another name us developmental phonetic disorder.

The speech disorder occurs in a young kid in their developmental time period. It can also be found in toddlers, according to the International Disability Center. Your loved one can overcome this difficulty through some exercises.

There are 4 types of lisps

  • Dentalized lisp: It happens when the child loose front teeth. Now child pushes towards the front teeth and slips while saying a word.
  • Interdental lisp:- Tongue goes beyond the front teeth for words s and z. Another name is frontal lisp.
  • Lateral lisp:- Air flows over the sides of the tongue to produce the word. It is a wet sound seems like a child has spit in the mouth.
  • Palatal lisp:- In this midsection of the tongue touches the soft palate while producing the word such as D, N.

Exercises For Those Who Does not pronounce the letters “s” and “r” correctly

Pronounce the Letter “S”

One regular speech impediment found in kids and a young teenager is a lisp, particularly while discussing the letter “s”. To help correct your drawl, start the activity by first standing in front of the mirror so you can watch the movement of your tongue in the mirror. Next, grasp your teeth together with your tongue slightly touching the back of your teeth.

Keeping in mind the end goal to make the “s” sound, push air between your teeth and over your tongue. Practice this sound various times each day while watching your mouth in a mirror with a specific end goal to later repeat this tongue movement. You can also use your cheek muscles to pull the sides of your mouth back to additionally make up for this sound. And also consult with your specialist in speech therapy.

Pronounce the Letter “R”

Forecast

Sometimes lisping problems resolve in children when they grow older about 5 to 8 years. If it will continue speech therapy is recommended.  As a result, it would be beneficial from children point of view as well as parents concerned. Sometimes treatment may take time a couple of months or sometimes a couple of years.
