Weighted Blanket?

A weighted blanket is a blanket with some extra weight. However, there are variations in the weights of the blanket. If you are choosing the weighted blanket so choose the 10% of your body weight adding 1kg or 800 gm. Weighted blankets come with a different pattern such as extremely soft, dotted Minky fabric.

Weighted Blankets Improve Sleep

The children with the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have much higher rates of sleep disturbance. The families accepted the intervention widely weighted blankets to improve the sleep quality for the children with ASD. The limited use of weighted blanket supported evidence.

That study was conducted at three clinical sites in England. In which enrolling the children age with 5 to 16 years with the diagnosis of ASD. All the children had a reported disturbance in the sleep for at least 5 months prior to enrollment.

This sleep disturbance included sleep latency. It means the delay of falling asleep for at least 1 hour after the lights out and receiving fewer than 7 hours of the continuous sleep.

The Manufacturing of Blankets

The investigators chose a single manufacturer to make both the weighted and the placebo blankets. The mainly two different sizes of blankets used, which depending on the age and size of the child. The weight of the small blanket was 2.25 kg, and the weight of the larger blanket was 4.5 kg.

Control blankets were made of the same material, but plastic beads were inserted into the blanket instead of the typical steel shot. This controls the insulating effect of a blanket during sleep. And the embedded beads provided similar tactile stimulation but without the inclusion of the weight.

There were some weighted blankets who were popular for the calming individuals with the Autism Spectrum Disorder. Unfortunately, the blankets contain the metal or plastic beads sewn into the quilted layers. This idea is that the weight provides gentle, the deep pressure and addresses the sensory-integration issues often associated with the autism.

These types of sensory issues, in turn, may add to the sleep disturbances that are likewise common among those who have autism. Some studies suggest that 40 to 80 percent of individuals with ASD have significant sleep problems like as in particular difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep.

Science Behind It

The science behind the weighted blankets is deep touch pressure. It is also abbreviated to DTP(Deep pressure Therapy). It is a pressure that is very gentle and applied to all over the body. Sometimes parents lay with their child so that they can calm their nervous system.

Conclusion

If you want to treat your child with autism than a weighted blanket is the best option. It is a way a treat your child with therapy.
