Is there a difference between a stutter and a stammer?

There is not a difference between a stutter and a stammer. The stuttering and stammering are two different words which are used to describe a similar condition. The stuttering word is commonly used in North America, Australia and stammering are specially used in Britain. It is common in children when they are learning to speak. The stammering is found five times more in boys than girls. It affects less than 1 percent of all adults.

Researchers are not sure about the causes of stuttering. The development of speech or languages is complicated and depends on many factors such as problem occurs during pregnancy because patients can carry the affected gene.

• Speech may come out in spurts.
• Words with various sounds are substituted for others.
• They avoid eyes contact when struggling for words or sounds.

Treatment
