What is the Difference Between Aphasia and Dysphasia?

Aphasia is a disorder caused by the damage to the brain affecting the speech of a person. In simple words, it is a communication disorder, affecting one speaking skills as wells as result in issues related to listening, reading, and writing. However, It does not hamper the knowledge of a person but limits them in such a  way, that they are unable to express and that too efficiently and effectively.

Types of Aphasia:

  • non-fluent Aphasia– Also known as expressive aphasia, person affecting from it knows what they want but have difficulty in expressing themselves
  • Receptive Aphasia-Also called fluent aphasia, a person affecting from it can hear the sound as well as read but cannot interpret the message, etc. Often they are confused with their own language.
  • Anomic Aphasia– In this type, person affecting from it find difficulties in choosing or selecting the right words for speaking and writing.
  • Global Aphasia– This is often called the most severe type where person affecting it is unable to speak and read effectively and efficiently. It can occur when someone has a stroke.
  • Primary Progressive Aphasia– The inability to read, to write, to talk may be one of the symptoms of primary progressive aphasia. However, the use of gestures may benefit them in order to communicate further tackling this disorder up to a certain extent.

Dysphasia is a disorder in which a person is not able to understand the language. The person affecting from it will know what other person is speaking and will even know the spoken words. But the major problem is of not understanding the language that someone speaks instantly.

Types of Dysphasia:

  • Expressive Type– This type of dysphasia affect speech and language of a person. The person affecting it knows what to tell but are unable to express them completely.
  • Receptive Type– In this case a person does not know the meaning of a sentence but are able to speak. They are often misunderstood by other people.
  • Global Type– This is caused because of injury in brain language areas. The people have intense difficulty in understanding the language and expressing themselves.

Causes and symptoms of Dysphasia and Aphasia are the same as both hinders the speaking skills or language skills. The severe impact on speech is with respect to Aphasia as it involves complete loss of speech, language skills, etc. Dysphasia, on the other hand, involves moderate speech impairments.
