Can wearing hearing aids cause dizziness?

The balance organ is part of the inner ear, even though the sense of balance actually comes from the coordination of three different body senses – the balance organ in the inner ear, the visual system and the muscles and joints in the body. Dizziness happens when there is a deficit in any of these three senses.

Dizziness is common and mainly occurs due to disturbances in the fluid present in the inner ear. It may also occur by the physiological changes in the balance nerve(found near the ear). Any type of imbalance caused leads to dizziness or tinnitus (ringing in the ear).

Reasons-Dizziness Caused By Hearing Aids

  • If someone has started wearing hearing aids recently. It takes time for anyone to become habitual to wear them and early days even cause dizziness.
  • If someone wears hearing aids that are not according to the severity of their hearing loss, they feel a sense of dizziness.
  • In-the-ear aids that occlude canal. It is the problem in which inner ear is completely blocked. Due to which the pressure inside and outside the ear is not the same.
  • Visual dizziness can occur if the eye muscles are imbalanced or errors of refraction. Like when you borrow a pair of eyeglasses from a friend with a different prescription.

Other causes for dizziness

These are some other cause of dizziness which is not related to the inner ear. If the brain is not coordinating with the inputs from the parts of the balance system, It means it is central dizziness. It may be caused due to migraine, infection, tumor and multiple sclerosis.

Other causes include intermittent inability to focus the eyes and also difficulty reading or intermittent blurring of vision. It can also be caused by muscle or joint problems. General health issues like thyroid, anemia, diabetes can also cause dizziness.

Symptoms of dizziness

  • Faintness or light-headedness
  • Visual motion
  • Photosensitivity
  • Feeling of weakness
  • A false sense of vertigo or motion
  • A feeling of dizziness or heavy  headless
  • Imbalance

Treatments for dizziness

Accurate treatment depends on the underlying cause, so it is important to consult with a doctor. He might prescribe you something to mitigate the dizzy symptoms temporarily but that medication must be discontinued at least 24 hours prior to an evaluation.

Medications

  • In Meniere’s disease, your doctor may prescribe a water pill.
  • Anticholinergics help reduce dizziness.
  • Your doctor or audiologist may prescribe a drug to provide immediate relief from vertigo.
  • Anti-anxiety medications like Diazepam (Valium) and alprazolam (Xanax).
  • Certain medicines may help in preventing attacks of migraine.

Therapy

  • Head position maneuvers usually help to resolve benign paroxysmal positional vertigo more quickly than simply waiting for your dizziness to go away.
  • Balance therapy helps you to learn specific exercises to help make your balance system less sensitive to motion.
  • Psychotherapy may help people whose dizziness is caused by an anxiety disorder.

Surgical or other procedures

  • Your doctor may inject your inner ear with the antibiotic gentamicin to disable the balance function.
  • Removal of the inner ear sense organ. A procedure which is rarely use is called labyrinthectomy. It simply disables the vestibular maze in the affected ear.
  • If you suspect any type of hearing loss, the very first step is to consult hearing care professional right away.
