This disorder is characterized by wide variation in challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, nonverbal communication and strengths possessed by each person with autism.

There are various effects of autism but it mainly affects the Social developmental and learning of an autistic child.

Effects of Autism on Social Development

  • Lack of Empathy- Many autistic children lack the ability to see things from another person’s perspective such as their knowledge, feelings, and intentions based on social cues such as gestures and facial expressions.
  • Making friends in real life and maintaining those friendships often proves to be difficult for children with autism. Autistic children often seem to prefer being alone and may passively accept such things as hugs and cuddling without reciprocating, or resist attention altogether
  • Behavioral Issues- Children may face difficulty regulating their behavior, resulting in crying, verbal outbursts and also self-injuring behavior. They are not able to adapt to change. However, as the child matures and receives education/training, he or she can gradually learn to control and cope with difficult situations and
    changes.

Effects Of Autism On Learning

  • Autistic people have a different way of auditory processing which makes it difficult for them to respond quickly. They process incoming information one string at a time.
  • Their thinking is very rigid and inflexible. They think either white or black, no grey in between. This causes tremendous anxiety. This prevents them from thinking about new ideas and hampers creativity.
  • They have poor coordination of eye and hand, that’s why many of them don’t play team sports such as basketball or soccer and have difficulty maintaining proper hygiene and properly wearing clothes.
  • They lack executive functioning which makes it difficult for them to organize and prioritize responsibilities.

How it affects development:

Many autistic children seem indifferent to other people, lacking in the personal interaction with others that non-autistic children are expected to exhibit. Perhaps learning only some words in a month. It takes more than 2 or 3 years to make a sentence or combine the words.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) don’t pay attention to other people in the same way as normal developing babies and children do. A child with ASD also gets hesitated to use eye contact or pointing to get someone’s attention or communicate.
