Are There Hearing Aids For The Single-Sided Hearing Loss?

Single-Sided Deafness involves major damage to hearing in one ear only. This will be a severe or inclusive loss of hearing in one ear. The hearing loss can be caused by disease or accident.

Folks with SSD can have specific difficulty understanding speech in background noise. This can be caused by difficulties locating the origin of the sound. Due to this, the brain has real problems separating background noise from speech.

Although an individual with single-sided deafness has one “good” or “aid-able” ear, they may still face problems in difficult listening situations. One in all the most important problems they often experience is an inability to localize sounds. This means that they can struggle to determine wherever a sound is coming from, particularly if the sound source is on the side of the deaf ear.

Another problem anyone with SSD can experience is being able to detach speech from the background noise, as the good ear is the only side hearing and trying to process both types of sounds. These two problems can impact the quality of life in social settings, educational/work settings, and daily activities.

Causes

Causes for Single-Sided Hearing loss. Damage can be conductive or sensorineural.

Cause for Conductive SSD

  • Otosclerosis.
  • Head or ear injuries.
  • Damage to the eardrum.
  • Ossicular disconnection.
  • Bacterial Infection.
  • Viral Infections.

Causes for Sensorineural SSD

  • Ototoxic drugs.
  • Viral Infections.
  • Injuries to the head or ear.
  • Menier`s disease.
  • Surgery involvement to remove a brain tumor.

These causes cover only common causes of SSD.

Potential Solutions

BAHAs

It is abbreviated as a bone-anchored hearing aid. Bone conduction of sound is used to deliver better hearing. It is commonly used for those people who are suffering from conductive hearing losses or SSD.

In this hearing aid device is attached to the abutment. It submerged and process the sound prior to transferring via abutment and the skull bone. This process needs to be handled with care.

CROS

One resolution could be a contralateral routing of signals (CROS) system. A CROS system routes the sound coming from the side of the deaf ear to the standard ear.

The patient wears one device on the deaf ear that picks up the sound by way of a microphone. This sound is then wirelessly transmitted to a hearing aid that’s worn on the normal ear.

If the person has one deaf ear. And, therefore, the other ear has some deafness that can be aided. The answers would be a Bi-CROS system or a bilateral contralateral routing of signals system.

Bi-CROS

The distinction between the Bi-CROS system and the CROS system is that the person is receiving sound from more than one microphone as the better ear is benefiting from a functioning hearing aid that’s also receiving sound signals from the opposite ear’s microphone.

By sending sound from the deaf ear to the normal or better ear, the person is capable of localizing more effectively and hear better whilst surrounded by background noise. This could facilitate to improve communication.

Advantages

Some additional advantages to this type of system are that the technology is wireless, discreet, doesn’t need surgery and is obtainable for any range of hearing for the better ear, as long as there’s a little bit of hearing to work with.

It is pretty wonderful that today’s technology is currently able to assist more people with different types of hearing loss. If you have single-sided deafness, there is now a wireless resolution accessible that can help to develop your overall quality of life.
